Starting an Etsy shop feels overwhelming when you’re staring at all those setup screens and wondering where to begin. But here’s the thing: thousands of sellers launch successful shops every single day using the same simple steps.
I’ll walk you through exactly how to start an Etsy shop and customize it like a pro. This guide covers everything from the initial setup to the finishing touches that make your store look professional.
Opening my digital product Etsy store changed everything for me. It gave me the freedom to work on my own schedule and earn more than I ever did as a graphic designer. Here’s the equipment I use to run my Etsy business, plus my guide for choosing the right printer for Etsy.
As I shared in my 2022 income report, my two Etsy stores now generate more income than my previous career. The flexibility alone makes it worth it.
If you want to nail your shop setup from day one, I recommend the E-Printables Side Hustle Course. That $299 investment completely turned my struggling shop around. My shop was barely making sales before I took it, and you can see the results below happened after applying what I learned.

I focus on digital downloads, but this guide works for physical product sellers too. The screenshots come from my Planprintland Etsy Shop.
What to do before opening an Etsy shop

Live in an eligible country
You can only sell on Etsy if you live in a country where Etsy Payments is available. Check the complete list of eligible countries to make sure you qualify.
Have at least one product to sell
You need something to list before you can open your shop. Don’t worry about having a huge inventory ready to go. You can always add more products later.
As a digital seller, I think Etsy is one of the best platforms to build a sustainable income. Etsy accepts many different file types, so you have plenty of creative options.
Bank account and debit or credit card in your name
This is crucial: your bank account and payment method must match the exact legal name and address you provide to Etsy. Using someone else’s account (like your partner’s) will get you banned permanently.
Etsy will verify your bank account through Plaid or manual verification once you start receiving payments.
I strongly recommend opening a separate business bank account. It makes tracking expenses and calculating taxes much easier at the end of the year.
Listing images or product photos
Each product needs at least one high-quality image. You can create professional-looking graphics using Placeit or Adobe Express. For digital products, you can also photograph your designs after printing them out.
How to Start an Etsy shop
If you don’t have a shop yet, you can get 40 free listings using my link below. Regular listings cost $0.20 USD each, plus another $0.20 when they sell and get automatically renewed. Full disclosure: I also get 40 free listings when you use this link.
Want to understand all the costs involved? Check out my complete Etsy fees breakdown for digital sellers, or review Etsy’s official Fees & Payments Policy.
You can also start by going to the Etsy homepage, scrolling to the bottom, and clicking “Sell on Etsy.”
You can use your personal email for now. As your business grows, you might want to register a domain and create a professional email address ([email protected]), but that’s not necessary at the beginning.

Enter your Etsy shop preferences
After creating your account, you’ll see the Shop Preferences screen. This is where you set up your basic shop settings.
Use your full legal name and address exactly as they appear on your bank account. Any false information can result in a permanent ban from Etsy.
Make sure your shop currency matches your bank account currency. If they don’t match, Etsy charges a 2.5% currency conversion fee on every sale.

Name your shop
Your shop name should be 4-20 characters with no spaces or special characters. Before you decide, do a quick Google search to make sure no other businesses are using that name. You might also want to claim matching social media handles.
If your first choice is taken, Etsy will suggest alternatives. Don’t stress too much about getting the perfect name right away. Focus on getting started.

Stock your shop with your first product
Now you’ll create your first listing. Getting this right is important for your shop’s success. I wrote a detailed guide on how to list a digital download on Etsy that covers everything you need to know.
Your first listing needs at least one image, product information, category, renewal settings, description, price, and quantity. Don’t aim for perfection. You can always edit it later.
You can’t open a shop without at least one listing. If you need more time to prepare your products, create a placeholder listing with an extremely high price so no one buys it accidentally.
How you’ll get paid
Enter your banking details where you want to receive payments. Remember, these must exactly match your legal information provided to Etsy.
Most sellers use Etsy Payments, which lets customers pay with credit cards, debit cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, and Etsy gift cards. Etsy processes all payments and deposits them into your bank account.
Since you don’t need a business license to sell on Etsy, most new sellers register as an individual or sole proprietorship.

Enter your billing information
Add your credit or debit card for billing. Many countries offer auto-billing, where Etsy automatically charges your card each month for fees.
Once you start making sales, Etsy will deduct fees from your shop balance instead of charging your card.

Click “Open your shop” and you’re officially in business!

How to Customize your Etsy store
Now for the fun part: making your shop look professional and trustworthy. The more polished your store appears, the higher your conversion rate will be.
Professional branding sets you apart from shops that look thrown together. Always use Etsy’s recommended image sizes for the best results.
Branding your Etsy store with your shop icon and Cover Images
Strong branding makes your shop memorable and trustworthy. Your logo, cover image, and listing photos should all work together with consistent colors and style.
Use free tools like Placeit or Adobe Express to create professional graphics. A cohesive brand identity is one of the fastest ways to boost sales as a new seller.
How to add an Etsy store icon
Your shop icon acts as your logo across Etsy. It appears on your storefront, in search results, and in customer messages.
To add or change your Etsy store icon:
- Go to your Shop Manager
- Click Settings
- Click Info and Appearance
- Click Upload your shop icon

Your shop banner is the first thing visitors see at the top of your homepage. Choose between Mini and Big banner sizes. I recommend the Big banner because it looks more professional.
Etsy Plus subscribers get two additional banner options: carousel and collage.
To add your Etsy shop banner:
- Go to your Shop Manager
- Click the pencil icon next to your shop name under Sales Channels
- Select the banner section (or click the pencil icon on your existing banner)
- Choose your banner type and upload your image

Every customer gets an order receipt email after purchasing. You can customize this with your own branded banner to create a consistent experience.
To manage your order receipt banner:
- Go to your Shop Manager
- Click Settings
- Click Info & Appearance
- Select Choose file next to Order receipt banner

Set up your or edit your Etsy shop policy settings
Clear shop policies build customer trust and protect your business. They set expectations and help prevent disputes.
Your shop policies should include:
- Returns and Exchanges (Digital items aren’t eligible for returns by default, but you can still offer refunds case by case)
- Cancellations
- Privacy Policy
To set up your Etsy policies:
- Go to your Shop Manager
- Click Settings
- Click Policy settings
- Use the navigation bar to switch between different policies
